Course description
With plenty of gain, this is a tough ultra marathon that should only be undertaken by experienced runners.
Shortly after the start, you will climb up through orchards before turning onto a singletrack trail with expansive views of the surrounding countryside and hills.
You’ll soon have the feeling of being in remote backcountry, particularly on the two short technical sections that take you deep into classic Moc Chau terrain.
After Checkpoint 1 a fast, flat, runnable section takes you through a beautiful valley filled with orchards. A climb at the head of the valley then takes you onto smaller trails, before a short technical section leads into the village of Hang Tau, one of the highlights of Vietnam Trail Marathon.
From Checkpoint 2 you will enjoy another runnable section and pass through a very remote village before climbing up to CP3.
The Checkpoint 3 to Checkpoint 5 section is absolutely stunning, with a different character to the rest of the area. While there are some hard climbs, there are plenty of runnable, flowing downhills and also some flatter parts, making this section a hit with seasoned trail runners. We always greatly look forward to coming back to this section every year and every year our runners love it too.
After joining the 42km runners in the village of Ban Doi (Checkpoint 5), you will enjoy some runnable trail before you face the climbing challenge on the way to CP6 in Pa Khen 2 village. As with all parts of VTM however, some good running is mixed into this section also.
After CP6 you will have an exclusive section just for our ultra runners, with villages, orchards and tea fields, before you join the other runners for the final section in the area’s most beautiful tea plantation where the magnificent VTM finish line is located. Here you can enjoy the great finisher buffet, fire, music and the beautiful views all around you.
VTM 70km is a 3-point qualifying race for ITRA, an ITRA National League race, an Asia Trail Master points race, and a 100K UTMB Index race.
